The Genesis X1-A automatic Swiss watch by LIV is now the number one contender as I search for a new watch. After more research, I realized I wanted something classy with an automatic movement like the Nereid, but also something rugged enough to handle my active lifestyle like the military-inspired Flyback Chrono. The Genesis X-1A fits the bill on both accounts – classy enough for my suit & tie 9-5, rugged enough for my active lifestyle, and more importantly has an automatic movement. Admittedly, it also comes with a substantially higher price tag, just over $400, however, if I can make up my mind before their Kickstarter campaign ends, I’ll save over 1/3rd off of retail.
Three main reasons I would be willing to fork over 4x more for this watch than those we’ve looked at so far, boil down to you get what you pay for. First, the movement is an extremely reliable and lasting Swiss-made movement with accuracy that will outlast movements made elsewhere. Second, the attention to every last detail, specifically in LIV’s use of a sapphire crystal for the face AND back of the watch. Trust me, it’s key to having a watch that looks brand new ten years after you buy it. I’ve had a salesman at a NYC Movado boutique furiously take his pocket knife to the face of a ($2500) watch without even a scratch – all a result of the sapphire crystal. Third, LIV offers a five year guarantee on each timepiece, which is 5x longer than the Nereid automatic. It also helps that they had a wildly successful campaign for a previous watch, so they have any manufacturing kinks inherent to small companies already worked out. Continue checking in as the search for my new watch continues, and in the meantime, learn more about the X1-A and LIV’s campaign on Kickstarter, or take a look at their full line up here.
